Russia asks UN to investigate chemical attack in Syria
Deputies and senators from Russia said today that the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) should study the attack with white phosphorus perpetrated in Syria allegedly by the international coalition, if it is finally confirmed.
“If the data on the use of white phosphorus are confirmed by the international coalition led by the United States during the bombing of the Syrian city of Hayin, then that must be the subject of a thorough analysis within the framework of the OPCW and the UN, “said Konstantin Kosachev, head of the international affairs committee of the Russian Senate.
Kosachev stressed that, in case of confirmation, Russia will address “the relevant instances“, since, he argued, it is clear that organizations such as “the white helmets” will never be commissioned to investigate certain countries. “Be that as it may, it is no less important to establish what actually happened,” he insisted.
The senator recalled that the use of white phosphorus is prohibited by the additional protocol to the Geneva Convention of 1949 and that “it is not the first time” that there are reasons to accuse the US to use that substance. “In particular, the Ministry of Defense already denounced that on September 8 US F-15 aircraft attacked the same province of Deir al Zur with white phosphorus,” he said.
In the same vein, Duma Security and Defense Committee member Frants Klintsevich called on the OPCW to check “immediately” if the information from official Syrian sources is true.
Although, immediately afterwards, he accused the United States and the United Kingdom of “politicizing” this organization and put in serious doubt that its conclusions could be “objective“.
According to the official SANA news agency, “the international coalition, led by the United States, bombed several areas in Syria, in the city of Hayin, 110 kilometers east of the city of Deir al Zur, with bombs of white phosphorus banned internationally.”
The agency said the coalition “continues its aggression against Syrian territory under the pretext of fighting terrorists” by the jihadist group Islamic State, which controls the area.
